The Gakundu cooperative is comprised of over a thousand coffee producers. Many share a similar story, owning less than a hectare of land for a select few varietals. When mixed together they create some incredible lots. Once picked and blended, the producers travel to the frantic local market to establish the price of their crop. Coffee is weighed and compared with the buyer, before a price and flexible payment terms are decided.

Production in Kenya presents challenges due to the high price of land. This results in producers struggling to grow yields large enough for roasters and importers which means it is among one of the most expensive origins to buy coffee from. To counter this, various projects were developed, including investment to teach producers how to cultivate their coffee trees, to increase yields through new farming methods. These projects were crucial in transforming Kenya to the incredible origin it is today.

BREW RATIOS

Espresso: 1:2 dose to yield, extracted in 28-36 secs
Filter: 0.07:1 coffee to water, brewed in 3-4 mins

ROAST DAY

Roast days are Tuesdays and Fridays. All orders placed by midnight the day before will be sent out first-class on the roast day.

ROAST TYPE

We create a new and unique profile for each coffee we roast. Although the profiles are different, our approach is always the same, to highlight and accentuate the flavours created at the farm and mill. This means we don’t label our coffees as espresso, filter, dark or light roast. All of our coffees are omni-roast, meant to be delicious however you brew. We believe the heart of speciality is keeping the identity and character of every coffee intact and alive, no matter the brew method.
