Kiambu County is a central province located just above the beautifully dynamic city of Nairobi. Being so close so the capital has its advantages, but there are also threats too. Industrial expansions are increasing and there are examples of coffee plantations that were once a bedrock of activity, being replaced by urban developments. Quite how this will affect smallholder farmers over the next 50 years, is unknown.

Despite this, Kenya is still a country that produces outstanding coffee. The Karinga Coffee Factory in particular, is a cooperative that we showcased last year and were keen to feature again. Alongside investments in processing equipment, the factory is proactive towards educating its members on sustainable farming methods. Technical advice is offered through training programs and water from the nearby river Rwabura is used for pulping before being recirculated. Karinga in the cup is juicy with a delicious citrus-like quality throughout.

BREW RATIOS

Espresso: 1:2 coffee to water, extracted in 28-32 secs 
Filter: 60-65g coffee per litre of water, brewed for 3-4 mins

ROAST DAY

Roast days are Tuesdays and Fridays. All orders placed by midnight the day before will be sent out first-class on the roast day.

ROAST TYPE

We create a new and unique profile for each coffee we roast. Although the profiles are different, our approach is always the same, to highlight and accentuate the flavours created at the farm and mill. This means we don’t label our coffees as espresso, filter, dark or light roast. All of our coffees are omni-roast, meant to be delicious however you brew. We believe the heart of speciality is keeping the identity and character of every coffee intact and alive, no matter the brew method.
