Kochere sits at the heart of Ethiopia’s most respected growing areas. Surrounded by other incredible regions like Gedeb, Oromia and Yirgacheffe, coffee grown in these regions are known for their incredibly high flavour definition and bright, distinct citrus and floral notes.
Kochere is a small region lot which is the product of Ethiopia’s auction system called the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange (ECX). The ECX often compiles the lots produced by small farmers into district and regional lots to create regional flavour profiles.
These large lots are then auctioned and the prices are made transparent to the producer so they can have a higher understanding of the value of their coffee. The ECX and a similar system in Kenya is unique in the world of coffee; focus is less on transparency for the buyer but empowering the producer.
