Claude Rutayisire manages the private mill Manyana. The mill sits a short distance from the riverside village, Butamwa. The river that lays in the middle of a valley whose surrounding mountains are home to the 320 smallholder producers whose coffee comprises Manyana.

This coffee derives from one of the mill’s first lots. 320 producers grow just enough in the region to make around 330kg of roasted coffee there a year. These smallholders are the backbone of Rwandan coffee production.

Manyana was such a great hit at the Roastery last year and we couldn’t wait to showcase this delicious coffee again. The hard work of Claude and his producers is evident in the final cup, which has a distinctly sweet, elegant flavour profile. As a further reflection of just how special this coffee is, Manyana was crowned as one of the winners at the Rwanda Cup of Excellence in 2018.

BREW RATIOS

Espresso: 1:2 coffee to water, extracted in 28-32 secs 
Filter: 60-65g coffee per litre of water, brewed for 3-4 mins

ROAST DAY

Roast days are Tuesdays and Fridays. All orders placed by midnight the day before will be sent out first-class on the roast day.

ROAST TYPE

We create a new and unique profile for each coffee we roast. Although the profiles are different, our approach is always the same, to highlight and accentuate the flavours created at the farm and mill. This means we don’t label our coffees as espresso, filter, dark or light roast. All of our coffees are omni-roast, meant to be delicious however you brew. We believe the heart of speciality is keeping the identity and character of every coffee intact and alive, no matter the brew method.
