New Recyclable Bags

From today we’re transitioning from compostable to recyclable coffee bag materials. You’ll be receiving an interim design as the new bags are still in transit.

Compostable plastics sound like the perfect solution to the problem of single-use packaging, however, the infrastructure for such is still in its infancy, meaning people and processing facilities in the UK are unprepared to handle compostable plastics.

Coffee Information

  • Country: Colombia
  • Method: Natural
  • Producer: Small producers of Villamaría
  • Region: Villamaría, Caldas
  • Varietal: Castillo Naranjal, Colombia
  • Elevation: 1,800 masl

Villamaría is a Colombian municipality located in the department of Caldas. The station represents the harvests of 30 to 50 coffee producing families in the surrounding area of Villarazo.

The drying station has the perfect climate and altitude for drying naturally processed coffee. Because of this, coffee roasters worldwide began to buy long-term from Villamaría, and neighbouring communities were then able to see the merits of selling coffee cherries here – a method uncommon in Colombia but seen in many other coffee-producing countries.

Producers of Villamaría had historically been promised higher prices and the purchase of an entire crop by large institutions in the past. But having never delivered on this promise, faith in new ventures had greatly diminished amongst producers.

Thankfully, the consistency of Jamaica’s every harvest has helped those hesitant to see the value of long-term commitment, with producers now growing in number as word spreads and roasters continue to support.
