Anywhere with Origin: Cycling & Hiking
TRAILS, BEACH AND BEYOND
From the trails, to the beach and beyond, let Origin Coffee take you anywhere. For our second blog in the series, we turn to Origin team members, Matt and Lizzy, and how their coffee rituals help to fuel their cycling and hiking adventures.
THE CYCLIST: MATT CLEAVE, WHOLESALE MANAGER
I was first introduced to cycling in 2012 when working at 108 Coffee House back home in Cornwall. Now friends of mine, the owners (Paul and Michelle) were both cyclists and cycling fans and encouraged me to get my first bike.
However, it wasn’t until I moved away from Cornwall (in 2018) to Yorkshire, that cycling began to play a much more significant role in my life. Cycling helped me to find community and meet a lot of incredible people in a place that was new and unfamiliar; this has continued to be the case in moving over to Manchester. For that, I owe a lot to cycling.
I think for me, pushing myself physically is a reason why I’m drawn to cycling. Together with the sense of freedom, the exploration, and a different perspective on the landscape you’re surrounded by, are all reasons why I enjoy the sport so much.
Coffee On The Go
Coffee ultimately introduced me to the world of cycling, and it combines two things I feel most passionately about. A typical coffee routine would be either a pre ride brew at home (if I’m riding solo) or meet at a coffee shop if riding with friends. From there, the ideal ride will always consist of a good mid ride coffee stop – which is what often dictates the route.
I love cycling on home roads when back in Cornwall. Last year, I spent a few big days on the bike with a good friend of mine (who has now moved back to Italy), showing him the sights and exploring new ones – stopping for good coffee, crab sandwiches, and pasties – it was amazing to share the roads with him and I look back on it very fondly!
I won’t lie, like most, summer is always the time I look forward to: the longer evenings, sunshine, being able to wear shorts and a jersey—but it’s made that much sweeter if you’ve endured and ridden through the winter; you appreciate that warmer weather for sure.
The Hiker: Lizzy Ferry, Wholesale Manager
Getting outside after work is a good way for me to get out of my head and into my body. I work remotely and leaving the house to swim/hike/run helps me leave work at work and to completely switch off.
Coffee and sports go hand in hand in my eyes, we often drive to the lakes on a Friday night and sleep in the car so we can wake up for an adventure the next day. The first port of call on any of these adventures is coffee, usually an AeroPress or cafetiere sat in the boot of the car with an epic view.
Coffee Stops
Last year my partner and I set out on a hike along the Northumberland coast path. We carried everything we needed and camped in the sand dunes along the way. Once the initial prep for the trip and travel is out of the way, your day-to-day becomes very simplistic. One foot in front of the other, with coffee stops scattered throughout the day, marking certain milestones on the journey.
It’s always the first coffee of the day that hits different for me. Our tired bodies on quiet beaches, watching the sun come up after a night in the dunes and a few days outside, anticipating another day of walking in front of you. Magic!
