Our Approach
Recipe: Coffee: 15g (medium) | Water: 250g at 98°C | Brew time: 2:30
Equipment: AeroPress | Acaia Scales | Feature Coffee Subscription
Step by Step Guide
Step 1
Prepare your setup. Gather all ingredients and equipment.
Step 2
Heat your brewing water to 97°C.
Step 3
Place a filter paper in the cap and rinse with hot water to remove any papery taste.
Step 4
Position the AeroPress upside down with the plunger extended (wider sections top and bottom, screw‑cap end facing up).
Step 5
Grind 12g of coffee to a medium grind (caster sugar texture), add it to the chamber, and gently shake to level.
Step 6
Place the AeroPress on scales, tare to zero, start your timer, and pour over 200g of hot water in a circular motion.
Step 7
Stir five times to ensure all grounds are saturated, then secure the cap on top.
Step 8
At 1:45, carefully place your vessel over the cap and then flip the AeroPress to sit on top of your vessel.
Step 9
At 2:00, hold and steady the vessel and press the plunger down with a firm, consistent pressure for 20–30 seconds, until you hear a hiss. Aim to complete the brew by 2:30. Serve immediately and enjoy.
Why Brew with an Aeropress?
The AeroPress is designed to perform convenient, high-pressure brewing with short contact time, bringing out clarity and sweetness that can sometimes be lost in immersion brewers like the cafetière. It’s a forgiving brew method with reliable results, making it ideal for newcomers and experienced brewers who want to experiment with grind size, different varietals and roast levels, water temperature, or method.
Expert Tip
"The AeroPress is one of the most versatile brewers available. Once you've mastered a reliable recipe, don't be afraid to experiment. Small changes to grind size, water temperature or brew time can unlock completely different characteristics in the same coffee."

Brewing Tips
- Choosing freshly roasted coffee is key to getting the most from your AeroPress. Lighter to medium-light roasts shine particularly well in the AeroPress, where the shorter extraction brings out brightness, florals, and delicate sweetness.
- The versatility of an AeroPress means you can brew with coffee roasted for espresso, as well as filter. For our recipe, we would recommend using a filter roast.
- If your coffee takes longer than 30 seconds to brew when pushing down on the AeroPress, make your grind setting coarser; if it is shorter, make your grind setting finer.
Frequently Asked Questions
We recommend a medium grind, similar to caster sugar, for this recipe. If your brew feels too slow or tastes bitter, try grinding slightly coarser. If it's sour or under-extracted, grind a little finer.
Not quite. Although the AeroPress uses pressure, it doesn’t generate enough to produce true espresso. Instead, it creates a concentrated coffee that can be enjoyed on its own or diluted with hot water for an Americano-style drink.
Taste is your best guide. If your coffee tastes bitter or hollow, try grinding coarser or shortening the brew. If it tastes sour or weak, grind finer or extend the contact time slightly.
Both methods produce excellent coffee. Our recipes use the inverted method, which gives you full control over the immersion time before pressing. The standard method is equally capable and can be slightly simpler for everyday brewing.
