Tanzania is a nation with a long history of coffee production tracing back centuries. In recent years, the country has been emerging as a significant player in the speciality coffee space, and we’re pleased to welcome a Tanzanian coffee to our lineup for the first time at Origin.
Initially, the Umalila cooperative in the Mbeya Rural District saw its six villages each operate individual processing stations. Facing the collapse of individual groups, the cooperative decided to establish an Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Society (AMCOS) in 2018, and by 2021, the acquisition of a CPU (Central Processing Unit). This evolution has enabled better quality control and consistency, leading to the ability to sell higher volumes at improved prices and resulting in greater economic benefits for the cooperative—rising to 106 tonnes in 2023.
