Anywhere with Origin: Surfing & Running
Exploring the Unknown
We’re big believers in seeking out the exceptional—from coffee to experiences. Getting outdoors. Exploring new landscapes and celebrating familiar journeys. On wheels or on foot, land or sea, the ritual of great coffee can take people on incredible adventures, as some members of the Origin team have shown us. As the days lengthen, we headed out in search of quality experiences, catching up with those who fuel outdoor adventures with exceptional coffee—no matter where their day takes them.
The Surfer: Aaron Sycamore, Events Manager
When I’m surfing it’s normally pretty early in the morning and I tend to lean toward something strong to get me moving—which is why I love my Moka pot: strong and sludgy, which is just what I need. My Origin subscription is great for this—helping me find an exceptional coffee with ease—ideal when I’m looking for simplicity in those dawn brews. I first got into surfing when I was around eight years old—family holidays, camping in Pembrokeshire, Wales, got me hooked on being outdoors and close to nature. For me surfing is such a simple, uncomplicated feeling. I love being in the water, connecting with nature and escaping from the busyness that is the modern world.
I’ve been very fortunate to travel to some amazing surf locations around the world, but my favourite place to surf is Bundoran, Ireland. I head out for a week each winter with some friends. It’s proper cold, surfing in thick wetsuits, padding out at first light, and finishing in the pub with a pint of the black stuff: it doesn’t get much better than that.
The Runner: Deryn Nannery, e-Commerce Coordinator
Running for me, like many others, didn’t come naturally. I remember my first parkrun with my dad at 14 years old back in 2013; finishing last and feeling so defeated. And yet, here I am over 10 years later running (mostly!) for fun and having just completed the 2024 London Marathon. That’s the thing about running, it ignites something in you. The buzz you get when you reach a PB, the chats you have with fellow running friends, or exploring new streets in your hometown that you’ve never found before.
Since making the move from the city to the Cornish coast during lockdown, I fell in love with the sport all over again. You cannot beat the feeling when you turn a corner and see the vast ocean: it gets me every time!
Coffee Rituals
Running has never just been about fitness for me, it is a way to take some time for myself in my day - and coffee is a huge part of that. On a weekend before a long run, I like to slow down and make myself a pour-over using my beautiful coffee dripper from EOT Ceramics and read a couple of pages of my book, calming my mind before getting out on the road. To finish it off, ending with an oat FW and a cinnamon bun from Stones Bakery, is the perfect Saturday to me.
