Porthleven Beach Clean with the Origin Team

Words by Nicola Tremayne, Sustainability Officer at Origin Coffee

As a B Corp, we're committed to reducing our environmental impact and maintaining high levels of staff welfare.

After carrying out a staff poll, a beach clean was the most popular idea for a staff activity day. Our new roastery in Porthleven is located just a ten-minute stroll from the rugged Cornish coastline, a perfect opportunity to carry out our staff activities on our doorstep at the same time as giving back to the community by picking up litter from this beautiful stretch of coastline.

After checking the tides (the beach disappears at high tide), we set off from the Roastery through the Cornish mizzle (technical term to encompass drizzle and mist), with our gloves, bin liners and litter pickers and enjoyed the fresh sea air.

Interestingly we did not find a significant amount of litter, but lots of beautiful shells and every different colour of seaweed you can imagine. There were 5 of us out of the office, from different departments, proving a great opportunity to get to know each other and learn more about each of our roles.

We all came back feeling refreshed from a good dose of sea air and satisfied that we had collected all sorts of plastics and metals from the beach. Each month 5 different staff members will set off to see what treasures can be found amongst the smuggling coves of the Cornish coast.
