OPAL One Pod Machine
This was bought as a gift for my wife on her request. The machine itself has some great features, temperature gauge and adjustable brew time settings make this more adaptable. As a result, I have had my best pod coffee to date from this machine over any other which I tend to find taste overly bitter. The taste of the coffee was clean and balanced. My one negative point on this is not on the machine so leaving as 5 stars, but I personally find the decaf pods (my wife is pregnant) to taste a little weaker than I would usually hope for from a coffee. I have a long standing opinion pod machines are not a scratch on espresso, but this is by far the closest I have tasted. If the coffee was more pronounced with bolder flavours, it would be even closer. Also two nice features - 1 the water refill flap so you don't have to take the whole tank out, and 2 the blue light that is on for the first minute to show the user how full the pod waste bin is. Nice user friendly touches.

The OPAL machine is a definite step up from the standard Nespresso branded machines with the temperature control and customisation of shot sizes.

So far so good
I bought the Opal pod machine while it was on sale. I have an espresso machine which I love, but wanted something as a back-up for a quick fuss-free espresso when I'm short of time or have several coffees to make.
Cons:
- As a first impression, the machine is not as well-built as I was hoping: in fact, the first one I received didn't work as the handle didn't lift or go down properly so was unusable, but Origin customer services were brilliant and arranged to have another one shipped out to me promptly. The handle on the replacement is also stiff to lift and especially put down, but I think this is just how it is. It would be better if it was a smoother motion which would assure me of its quality. You just have to be careful when using the handle and not rough.
- The machine continues to drip for a bit after the main shot has poured which is a bit annoying. You have to wait up to 10-15 seconds for it to stop emitting water completely.
Pros:
- The machine is simple to set up: the instruction manual makes it sound more complicated than it is to set the temperature (from low/medium/high) and set a programmed time for each shot (you can set up to three programmed times, one for each button at the front of the machine) - I watched a YouTube video which made it simple. It took less than 5 minutes to programme my machine accordingly. I hoped Origin would have their own set up guide and recommendation on optimal settings for the machine (temperature, programmed time) but…

More sophisticated than the usual
Got this at a discount, making it comparable to mainstream option. The temperature change mechanism feels a little bit like entering cheat codes on a games console, but is definitely a welcome feature. The missing star? The leaver arm is not a smooth arc, there are a couple of click moments to watch out for, otherwise your cup might well jerk out of place without a steadying hand.
